Kent’s Chief Executive Jamie Clifford believes the county were wise to experiment with the pink ball game at Canterbury.

Cricket has evolved over the years and seen many changes with few having predicted a decade ago that we would all go and watch Twenty 20 cricket in the numbers that we have.

It’s for that reason that the MCC and ECB have decided to use the current Kent v Glamorgan game to see whether if it is possible to play day/night cricket using the pink ball and as to whether there would be the demand from the paying public to go and watch it.

As Kent’s head administrator, Clifford was keen to see the game go ahead, even if it did mean a quick change of plans:

“We only found out a week before the game was scheduled to start and that didn’t really give us that long to sort things out logistically.”

“There’s always lots to do to get a game on anyway and you can only imagine the headache it gave us trying to rearrange things to make sure we started without a hitch.”

Regards whether the experiment had been a success or not, Clifford was cautious with his words, suggesting it had pros and cons:

“Having been asked by the ECB, it was always going to be the case that some people would want to come along and see what it was all about, however we do understand some members were less than pleased with the timings of the play each day.”

“I am sure the ECB will look at everything about the game and then go from there as to whether they would consider doing something similar again.”

Despite having been questioned as to whether it was worthwhile by many of the players that took part, Clifford felt there was some merit in having tried to see whether it could have some mileage in the long run:

“If we don’t try these things we will never know whether they work or not. Everything has to start somewhere and only time will tell as to whether it will be a success.”
